Let us introduce the guy who leads this both complicated and fascinating process of data science – Dmitrijs Lvovs, Head of the Risk Management Department. With a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics and unique professional experience in both finance/IT and nonprofit/research fields, Dmitrijs is now managing the team of conversant data analysts within the VIA SMS Group and makes sure that the company is always one step ahead in astounding data science.
1. How did you find yourself working within the fintech industry?
I am a research person in the word’s most immediate meaning. Being at the forefront of the technology as well as observing the effect from own actions right away has always fascinated me. As I have experienced working in various fields, I find it unusual how fintech satisfies both needs. Nowadays traditional finance lacks the forefront, and academic environment rarely brings an immediate effect on processes.
2. What do you enjoy the most about your job?
It’s nothing near boring! Fintech is developing at an extremely fast pace, and we always chase technology trends to keep up with the best. There are much more ways how data is influencing the daily decision-making process than people usually assume, so we tend to try as many options as we can find and create our own to achieve the most efficient result. The feeling when a model you have built from scratch predicts the future pretty accurately is incredibly rewarding too.
3. What makes you happy outside the work?
For me, the family is an inexhaustible source of joy. I also really enjoy nature, especially opportunities that water gives in each aggregate state of it – snow for winter sports, swimming and wakeboarding in summer, etc. I also try to be somewhat active in the academic environment.
